About the Artist
Yang Fan is a young social-realist painter, in 1998 her subject matter began to
portray the girls from the Southern Chinese towns. These girls are commonly depicted
as fashionable with heavily-laced make-up coupled with their smoking habits and
modeling careers. Yang Fan reveals the urban materialization of the girls, reflecting
their counterparts from the western capitalist countries.
Her paintings often express the fantasy and surface culture of these young females
in their demure and carefree manner in a transitional and dreamlike state, although
trapped in the period of transition – to save themselves by continually up keeping
their materialized lifestyles. These countryside girls are characterized as losing their
simplicity and cutting their past roots, plunging themselves zealously into the New
World; traveling to new places, excitement for new products and accessories, to be as
beautiful as the next model. Their openness and thirst for materialization and
internationalization form the post-industrial culture of Urban China.
Yang Fan's paintings relay an unconscious self-recall when global culture and
capitalist popular culture have a great impact on the next generation. Her theme is
about influenced sorrow and influenced road to liberation.
