Farhan Siki
2022 UOB Painting of the Year award winner Farhan Siki combines the aesthetic languages of consumer culture, graffiti and street art using wheatpaste, stencil, spray paint and advertising techniques. Avoiding the ivory tower, Siki learned how to paint from the street, taking the visual cultures, namely graffiti and advertisements, he was exposed to as a member of a city. Graffiti and street art have a rich history of critique in Indonesia, visible from when many young Indonesians wrote phrases like “Hands off Indonesia” and “Indonesia for Indonesians!” on public buildings during the colonial period to today, where graffiti and street artist made their qualms with government corruption during the pandemic known on walls across Jakarta.
