About the Event

An Infinite Canvas presents a decade-long artistic experiment by Chinese contemporary artist Xia Xiaowan, who has devoted himself to a single evolving artwork since 2016. Rejecting sketches, fixed compositions, and finality, Xia allows the painting to grow organically through a process he calls “associative structure,” where forms continuously generate new forms. Expanding across 63 sheets of paper and measuring 671 × 382 cm, the work transforms fragments of art history, personal memories, myths, landscapes, and everyday imagery into a dense visual ecosystem. Rather than pursuing a singular style or narrative, Xia embraces uncertainty, chance, and continual reinvention, creating a living, open-ended painting that reflects the complexity, fragmentation, and fluidity of contemporary life. The exhibition invites viewers to witness painting not as a finished object, but as an ongoing process of discovery, imagination, and renewal.
